Notes on the legal position and the relationship between the owners and the guardians -
CADW: Welsh Historic Monuments
Although CADW: Welsh Historic Monuments are responsible for the care and upkeep of the medieval part of Penarth Fawr, the legal ownership of the monument remains with whoever owns the freehold. A deed of guardianship exists to ensure the continuity of this arrangement. Any subsequent owner of Penarth Fawr is not required or legally obliged to take on the day to day custodianship of the medieval hall, but of course can do so if desired.
CADW: Welsh Historic Monuments have always allowed appropriate usage of the hall by the owners; for example over the preceeding 18 years we have used the hall for exhibitions, lectures, recitals, meetings and receptions, (even a ‘medieval’ 50th birthday party!) and in the garden at the front of the hall we have had medieval re-enactments and plant fairs.
At present, (by agreement with CADW) the hall is open to the public (free of charge) from Easter to the end of September, from Tuesday to Friday - 10.00 a.m to 5.30 p.m and on Saturday and Sunday from 2.00 p.m to 5.30 p.m
