Penarth Fawr is a rare example of a mid 15th century stone-built aisle-truss hall house, a typical home of a Welsh Gentry family. The present complex of buildings consist of the original medieval hall (15th.C. Grade 1 listed and a scheduled ancient monument), an attached 17th.C. service wing, now a four-bedroom farmhouse (Grade II listed).
Brief History
Penarth Fawr is a rare survivor of a typical home of a Welsh Gentry family of the 15th century. It is possibly the oldest standing domestic dwelling from this late medieval period in Gwynedd. Described as a stone-built aisle-truss hall-house, it was built by Hywel ap Madog about 1460 on the boulder foundations of an earlier house.
It is believed to be the furthest westerly example of a Hall house in Britain
